FAQs: How to care for your pillow
How often should you replace your pillow?
Even the best pillow for sleeping will eventually wear out with nightly use. So, how do you know when it’s time to order a new one? As a rule of thumb, you should replace your pillows every two years—or sooner if they show signs of breaking down or are affecting your sleep quality. Keep an eye out for yellowing, excessive floppiness, and unusual neck pain. These could all be signs that it’s time for a new pillow. You might also try fluffing your pillow or even folding it in half. If it doesn’t return to its original shape, it’s high time for a new one.
Can you wash your pillow?
For the Memory Foam Pillowcore Please do not machine wash or fully soak the memory foam core—it’s what keeps the pillow soft and supportive, and getting it too wet can damage its shape or lead to mildew. If you spot a small stain, just do a quick spot clean: Dampen a soft cloth with mild, cool water (add a tiny bit of gentle detergent if needed), gently blot the stain (don’t rub!), then let it air-dry completely in a well-ventilated area (away from direct sunlight or heaters). For the Pillowcase The pillowcase is totally removable and washable! Toss it in the washing machine with similar colors, use a gentle cycle and mild detergent, and tumble dry on low heat (or hang it to air-dry—either works!). It’ll come out fresh and ready to snuggle with again. We recommend a pillow protector to avoid excessive washing. In cases when your pillow does need a thorough cleanse (such as when you’re sick with the flu), follow our tips for disinfecting your pillow.
Should you use a pillow protector?
When you invest in one of the very best pillows for sleeping—one that provides the support and alignment your body needs to rest comfortably—you should also invest in taking care of it. A pillow protector will extend the life and performance of your pillow while maintaining your sleep quality. Like mattress protectors and sheets, pillow protectors help keep your pillow clean, keeping out dust mites and allergens. We recommend washing your pillow protector whenever you wash your sheets and pillowcases.
Do you need to fluff you pillow?
Fluffing your pillow daily helps maintain its loft and resiliency. Foam pillows don’t need to be fluffed.
What size pillow do you need?
Wondering how to choose a pillow that looks like it belongs on your bed? Pillows come in all shapes and sizes, but the most common pillow sizes are standard and king. Standard pillows, which measure 26 inches by 20 inches, are appropriate for all bed sizes. King-size pillows, measuring 20 inches by 36 inches, are best used with king beds. Whatever pillow size you choose for your sleep setup, just be sure to get a matching pillowcase!
What's the best pillow for sleeping?
The best pillow for sleeping depends on a number of factors, but one of the most important determiners is your typical sleeping position—side, back, front, and so on. The best pillow for stomach sleepers, for example, is low and flat to help keep your body aligned. (A higher pillow would put unneeded stress on your neck in this position!) The best pillow for side sleepers is on the opposite end of the spectrum: firm and thick to properly support the neck. A curved shape pillow is a great choice for side sleepers, as it will enhance comfort by fitting to the unique contours of the body. Back sleepers will do well with a medium-thick pillow that provides just the right amount of support. And if you’re already struggling with discomfort while you sleep, you may want to find the best pillow for neck pain—one that keeps your head, neck, and shoulders properly aligned.
